According to a report from My Digital Life, Windows 7 Ultimate has already been cracked with the aid of leaked OEM DVD ISO from Lenovo. The crack provides permanent instant offline activation and passes WGA with flying colors. The leaked ISO was posted and snagged off a Chinese forum, which allowed hackers to retrieve the OEM-SLP and certificate for Windows 7 Ultimate.
Redmond has updated the System-Locked Pre-installation (SLP) to version 2.1, which supports Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 and provides backward-compatibility for Vista and Server 2008. The SLP procedure is used to pre-activate Windows for mass distribution by OEMs. Its latest version requires the BIOS SLIC table be updated, as it contains a new Windows marker. The trick is to mod the BIOS to include SLIC 2.1 ? which can be done via hard (physical) or soft (emulation) mods.
The original post gets more in-depth, and contains much more information. Naturally, the crack can already be found on various torrent sites.
Pirate Bay sale looks uncertain
The Pirate Bay angered a few and surprised us all late last month with an announcement that it had struck a deal with Swedish firm Global Gaming Factory for $7.8 million, to eventually offer legal downloads of copyrighted material. Its shot at legitimacy may be over before it even begins, however, as things have started to turn sour behind the scenes.
The company had outlined a ?give and take? model which offered users discounts for sharing their resources. In a nutshell, users would be charged a small monthly subscription to pay content providers, but would also be able to subsidize their fee by dedicating certain portions of their computing power to the site. This extra bandwidth could then be sold to Internet service providers to generate revenue.
GGF?s scheme seemed plausible enough on paper and former Grokster CEO Wayne Rosso was brought aboard to help strike deals with the music industry and refine the business model. But just two weeks later those plans appear to be on rocky ground, with Rosso stating that Global Gaming Factory doesn?t have a clear and well thought out plan of execution.
The executive confirmed it has walked away from the project because of "strong doubts" that the Swedish company even has enough funds to acquire The Pirate Bay. For its part, Hans Pandeya, Global Gaming's CEO claims everything it going according to plans and that his company's investors and board will vote on whether to acquire The Pirate Bay sometime in August.

Apple claims jailbroken iPhones could harm cell towers
Furthering their long-standing opposition to people, jailbreaking, the iPhone, Apple has made a powerful assertion that is sure to leave some people with gaping mouths. According to them, the practice could lead to massive denial of service attacks on cell towers. Apples claim is that people tinkering with the iPhones software innards could execute commands that would crash cell tower software, resulting in people being unable to make phone calls or otherwise causing havoc on local cell networks.
They draw a comparison between people jailbreaking the iPhone to someone breaking into a corporate network and damaging computers. I give credit to Apple for the iPhone, but can they truly be making such a claim with a straight face.Cell phones have been broken millions of times across multiple platforms and multiple vendors. What makes the iPhone so exceptionally dangerous that allowing people the freedom to tinker with it will result in massive service outages all over the world.
Currently, the U.S. Copyright Office is reviewing requests backed by the EFF and others to completely legalize jailbreaking. If enough people buy Apple?s rhetoric regarding this, however, such efforts could be crushed. It's clear that the company just wants to protect their bottom line, but their latest claims are preposterous at best.

Google to launch PC operating system
The final element in Google?s drive to reshape the computing landscape fell into place on Wednesday when it unveiled plans for a PC operating system that would compete directly with Microsoft?s Windows.
But the fortress that Microsoft has built around Windows is likely to withstand this attack for some time to come, giving the software company room for manoeuvre as it tries to reshape its own technology around the internet, analysts said.
Google said a number of low-priced laptops known as netbooks, based on its new operating system, would go on sale in the second half of next year.
It predicted that the software would bring benefits to PC users from greatly cutting the time it takes for a machine to start up to reducing the complexity of managing personal computers.
Coming in the wake of its Android operating system for smartphones and Chrome web browser for accessing the internet, Google?s planned operating system, to be called Chrome OS, will complete the range of software that the company produces for internet-connected devices.
Google makes no money directly from open-source software like Chrome OS.
The importance to the company of the software is that it serves as a platform that could eventually drive more users to its web services, feeding its dominant search advertising business. Users will not have to rely on Microsoft?s dominant Windows.
The challenge to Microsoft is clear. Some 45 per cent of its $22.5bn of operating profits last year came from the Windows PC operating system, but the software?s significance to Microsoft extends much further.
Its second big money-spinner, the Office suite of applications, is tied to Windows.
As an open-source system based on freely available Linux software, Chrome OS takes aim at that.
Given Windows?s deeply entrenched position in computing, however, most analysts said that Google would find it hard to unseat the software group. ?This isn?t going to be something that is going to hurt Microsoft very quickly, it?s going to take some time before it really makes a dent,? said Mike Silver, an analyst at Gartner.
More than 70 per cent of the software applications used by the typical company run on the Windows operating systems, he said, making it expensive and time-consuming for companies to consider changing to a new operating system.
The Chrome OS might make a much bigger impact among consumers, though even individual PC users have shown a strong preference for software applications that run on Windows, analysts said.
Microsoft has already proved adept at fending off a series of attacks on its Windows PC business, leaving it with a market share of around 97 per cent, according to Gartner.

A General Guide To Internet Security
This is just a general guide, made from bits and pieces over the net. Feel free to comment .
Firewalls and Anti-Viruses:
1.Turn off windows built in firewall. It's inefficient and can cause problems when you try to run other firewall and anti viruses software. This can be done by going to start > Control Panel > Security Center > Click Windows Firewall under Manage Your Security Settings, then select off, and your done.
2.Obtain a good firewall and viruses kit (Recommend: Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite, McAfee).
3. Get some good spy ware removal software. If you are going to use Zone Alarm, MacAfee etc then these already have the spy ware software built in so you don't need to worry about this section. If you are not using any of these, then it is still most likely that your Anti-Virus software will contain some form of spy-ware removal software. If it doesn't, a good program is Ad – Aware by Lavasoft, or Spyware Doctor.
4.Get some extra software for things that your standard anti – virus might not be able to cope with such as Rootkits. A good tool for these is UnHackMe. (Use if you visit a lot of UNSAFE sites)
5.ALWAYS regularly update all your software. Anti – virus software that isn't updated is useless.
6.ALWAYS run regular scans for both virus's and spy ware. .
Website Browsing:
The first rule about website browsing in almost definitely DO NOT give out any information to a website you don't trust. The trick is learning how to trust a website. This will be cover in the following points.
1.Try to only go on sites, you know and trust. Now obviously there will be times you need to go on sites you don't know. So as a general rule, if you Google something, then only go on the sites listed on the first page. Anything after the first search page is usually so far removed from the topic you typed in anyway it's useless.
2.If the site wasn't from Google, when you first go on it, look for contact details. It could be anything address, phone number, email. If it there is an email address send a sort email to it and see if it bounces. If there is a phone number try phoning it (assuming its in your country otherwise your phone bill will sky rocket). Although having said this you only really need to do this on sites you will be submitting personal information to, or that you will be downloading heavily from.
3.Next is the "rule of 4". If you are on a site, (Known or Unknown) try not to link out of it more than 4 times. This means try not to following a link from it, then from that site, and the next so and and so forth.
4.If you are submitting financial information always look for the padlock symbol at the bottom right of the browser. If you put your mouse over it, most of the time it will tell you the encryption level. Absolute minimum should be 128 bit. This is the standard.
5.Use different email ids for different purpose. That is, one for officail use, a different one for personal use, a different one for forums and site etc etc.
Encryption:
1.Encryption simple to use, hard to understand. If you want to understand to basic behind it here is a good link
IP/Proxy:
1.An IP address is a unique address given to your computer by your ISP or Internet Service Provider. IP stands for Internet Protocol Address.
2.When you proxy your computer, you go through some other computer or server to make it look like your coming from somewhere else. As standard most computers will go through at least 3 or 4 servers before hitting the net, some as many as ten.
3.If you find a Elite proxy server(use google) when you connect to the net you will be effectively invisible. You can get software to do this for you, but it is usually very expensive, so a simpler way to do it is to find a fast reliable sever, (not as easy as it sounds), then if your using FireFox go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Settings. Then tick the box that says Manual Proxy Configuration. Now take the IP address and connecting port of the server and enter it into the http box and tick the box that says "Use This Server For All Protocols". However if the server isn't a HTTP protocol, (possibly Sock4 or Sock5) then enter it in the respective boxes.

ADD OPEN WITH TO ALL FILES
You can add "Open With..." to the Right click context menu of all files. This is great for when you have several programs you want to open the same file types with. I use three different text editors so I added it to the ".txt" key.
1. Open RegEdit
2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell
3. Add a new Key named "OpenWith" by right clicking the "Shell" Key and selecting new
4. Set the (Default) to "Op&en With..."
5. Add a new Key named "Command" by right clicking the "OpenWith" Key and selecting new
6. Set the (Default) to "C:\Windows\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1", C:\ being your Windows drive. You must enter the "OpenAs_RunDLL %1" exactly this way.
LOCKOUT UNWANTED USERS
Want to keep people from accessing Windows, even as the default user? If you do not have a domain do not attempt this.
1. Open RegEdit
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon
3. Create a dword value "MustBeValidated"
4. Set the value to 1
This forced logon can be bypassed in Safe Mode on Windows 9x delete
CUSTOMIZE SYSTEM TRAY
You can add your name or anything you like that consists of 8 characters or less. This will replace the AM or PM next to the system time. But you can corrupt some trial licenses of software that you may have downloaded.
1. Open RegEdit
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International
3. Add two new String values, "s1159" and "s2359"

If you enter two different values when modifying, you can have the system tray display the two different values in the AM and PM.
Here is how to add any application to the Context Menu when you right click on any Folder. This way you do not have to always go to the Start Menu. When you right click on any folder, you can have access to that application, the same as using Sent To.
1. Open RegEdit
2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell
3. Add a new Key to the "Shell" Key and name it anything you like.
4. Give it a default value that will appear when you right click a folder, i.e. NewKey (use an "&" without the quotes, in front of any character and it will allow you to use the keyboard)
5. Click on the Key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\NewKey
6. Add a New Key named Command
7. Set the (Default) value of the application you want to run
ADDING EXPLORE FROM HERE TO ALL FILES

In areas where you are trying to restrict what users can do on the computer, it might be beneficial to disable the ability to click on My Computer and have access to the drives, control panel etc.
To disable this:
1.Open RegEdit
2.Search for 20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D
3.This should bring you to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID section
4.Delete the entire section.
Now when you click on My Computer, nothing will happen.
You might want to export this section to a Registry file before deleting it just in case you want to enable it again. Or you can rename it to 20D0HideMyComputer4FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D. You can also hide all the Desktop Icons, see Change/Add restrictions.
To make Windows use multiple Start Menu Columns instead of a single scrolling column, like Windows 9x had, Also if you are using Classic Mode in XP
1. Open RegEdit
2. Go to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ Advanced
3. Create a string value "StartMenuScrollPrograms"
4. Right click the new string value and select modify

CHANGE THE LOCATION OF WINDOWS INSTALLATION FILES
If you need to change the drive and or path where Windows looks for its installation files:
1.Open RegEdit
2.Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Setup
3.Edit the value next to SourcePath
CHANGE THE CAPTION ON TITLE BAR
Change the Caption on the Title Bar for OutLook Express or the Internet Explorer:
For Outlook Express:
1. Open RegEdit
2. Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OutLook Express

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\IDENTITIES \{9DDDACCO-38F2-11D6-93CA-812B1F3493B}\ SOFTWARE\ MICROSOFT\ OUTLOOK EXPRESS\5.0
3. Add a string value "WindowTitle" (no space)
4. Modify the value to what ever you like.
For no splash screen, add a dword value "NoSplash" set to 1
The Key {9DDDACCO-38F2-11D6-93CA-812B1F3493B} can be any key you find here. Each user has his own Key number.
The Key 5.0 is whatever version of IE you have
For Internet Explorer:
1. Open RegEdit
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
3. Add a string value "Window Title" (use a space)
4. Modify the value to what ever you like.
ADD/DELETE PROGRAMS TO RUN EVERY TIME WINDOWS STAR
You can start or stop programs from executing at boot up by adding or deleting them to/from the run Keys in the Registry. Windows loads programs to start in the following order; Program listed in the Local Machine hive, then the Current User hive, then theWin.ini Run= and Load = lines. then finally programs in your Start Up folder.
To add or remove programs in the Registry
1.Open RegEdit
2.Go to the desired Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion \Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion \RunServices
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion \Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion \RunServices
3. Add a new String Value and name it anything you like
4. For the value data, enter the path and executable for the program you want to run.
By adding the value to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive instead allows the program to start only when that user is logged on.
If you add the value to the RunOnce key the program will run once and be removed from the key by Windows.
REMOVE THE SHORTCUT ICON ARROWS
1.Open RegEdit
2.Open the Key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
3.Open the Key LNKFILE
4.Delete the value IsShortcut
5.Open the next Key PIFFILE
6.Delete the value IsShortcut
7.Restart the Windows
Customize Internet. Explorer Title bar
This tip won't make your computer any faster but may help personalize your computer experience. Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet. Explorer\Main. In right hand panel look for string "Window Title" and change its value to whatever custom text you want to see.
Easy Text Size Change in Help & IE Tip:
I mentioned a way that you can change the size of the text that is display in the Help file and in Internet Explorer. As it turns out if you have a "wheel mouse," there is an even easier way to change the text size. In Internet Explorer or when viewing a Help file, simply hold the ctrl key while you spin the mouse wheel up to increase text size, or down to decrease text size.
Java VM: Java applets run in Internet Explorer 6 (a component of Windows XP) just as they run in older versions of Internet Explorer. The Java VM is not installed as part of the typical installation, but is installed on demand when a user encounters a page that uses a Java Applet. For more information see the Microsoft Technologies for Java Web site.
How to improve on shutdown time ? Close apps automatically & quickly at shutdown...
Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP and look for AutoEndTasks. On my computer default value is 0. Change it to 1. Thats all. Further more you can reduce the time it takes for Windows to issue kill directive to all active/hung applications.
In doing this only constraint that you should make sure exists is that HungAppTimeout is greater than WaitToKillAppTimeout. Change the values of WaitToKillAppTimeout to say 3500 (since default value for HungAppTimeout 5000 and for WaitToKillAppTimeout is 20000)

You can start or stop programs from executing at boot up by adding or deleting them to/from the run Keys in the Registry.

BEWARE Indian Orkut Accounts Compromised For Phishing
According to McAfee Avert Labs, as Web 2.0-based social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace increase in popularity, their users too are increasingly proving as convenient attack points for identity scams and other online frauds. Recently, hackers, online scammers and other cyber-criminals have been using Twitter as well to phish off private data from Web surfers.
Aside these websites, another social networking site that cyber-criminals prefer to use is Orkut, which probably represents the most widely visited and popular social networking site across the Indian sub-continent. As a matter of fact, reports state that over 15% of Orkut traffic flows from India.
Consequently, phishers have devised a stylish approach i.e. in light of a huge population of Indian users favoring Orkut but being insufficiently tech-savvy, phishers and other online scammers have secured control over their accounts through the act of hijacking the Orkut networking accounts of these India-based users.
Seemingly, phishers have modified these accounts' user profiles, connecting them to their different fraudulent (phishing) websites that entice users into revealing their private details.
For instance, these phishing sites could pretend to be Orkut in its adult version. Meanwhile, it is reported that the fake Orkut website on sex-related content named "Orkut Sex" has met with ongoing success in enticing numerous Orkut members into feeding personal user identifications into the bogus site. Accordingly, when these identification details come into the hands of scammers, the latter use them to harvest other private details of the users and subsequently make illegal money transfers.
McAfee Avert Labs, meanwhile, has observed an array of phishing sites related to Orkut namely http://orkutst[blocked].tk, http://orkutsexlogi[blocked].tk, http://priya[blocked].freehostia.com, http://s3x[blocked].kilu.de and http://album[blocked].kilu.de.
Thus, security experts at McAfee once again repeat for end-users that they mustn't disclose their monetary or any other personal information online, especially on websites such as Orkut. They also reiterate that users must ensure for all protective measures, in place, on their computers, while avoiding all forms of phishing sites.
Moreover, users on Orkut, MySpace, Facebook and other social networking sites must make themselves aware of the botherations they might encounter if a malicious spam or phishing attack chases them.
